Gifts for Archie and Lilibet
Harry is always animated and on good form when interacting with children, and he even received some sweet gifts for his children, Prince Archie, six, and Princess Lilibet, four, from nine-year-old Gwen - recipient of Inspirational Child 7-11 award.
Watch their interaction below...
Harry talks 'challenging' sibling bond
Our Royal Editor, Emily Nash, is at the WellChild Awards with the Duke of Sussex:
Prince Harry joked about his bald spot, ginger hair and sibling relationships as he met the young winners of the 20th Wellchild Awards ahead of the ceremony.
He also took part in some fencing, using swords made from balloons, after being challenged to a duel by one little girl.
Harry spent around an hour meeting children and young people being recognised by the charity, and had plenty of fun along the way.
Chatting to Declan Bitmead, 17, winner of the Inspirational Young Person 15-18 award, who has seriously impaired vision, he asked: "How much sight do you have?"
Told not much, Harry made Declan laugh, telling him: "I'm bald, I'm ginger and worst of all I've got a ginger beard. You're thinking 'Phew'."
He also asked about his family. "I've got a younger brother," said Declan.
"Does he drive you mad?” asked the Prince, but he was told they got on fine.
"You know what, siblings," said Harry, laughing.
Told Declan and his brother are at the same school, Harry replied: "That sometimes makes it more challenging."
'Best gift ever, thank you so much'
Nine-year-old Gwen Foster, winner of the Inspirational Child 7-11 award, challenged the Duke to a sword fight, prompting him to leap up from his seat and wield a balloon model in the shape of a blade.
Moments earlier, Gwen had presented him with gifts for his children – a Brighton and Hove Albion football shirt for Archie and a Wigan Athletic shirt for Lilibet.
"Best gift ever, thank you so much," Harry told her. "This is so cool, it's going to make them so happy."
Another young winner, Ansel Hayward,13, winner of the Inspirational Young Person 12-14 Award, gave him giftwrapped books for the children.
Harry was 'so friendly'
Harry, who had flown in overnight from Los Angeles, took his time chatting to the winners and their families, including six-year-old Esmée Mcglinchey, who he will later present with the Inspirational Child 4-6 Award.
The courageous youngster, who was born prematurely at 28 weeks, has since endured 39 surgeries, including two in January of this year.
Harry laughed as she munched on Hula Hoops and persuaded her to put one on a finger like a ring.
And admiring the little girls frilly socks, he told her: "My daughter would love these socks."
Her mum Toni Hynes, from Stoke-on-Trent, told the Duke: "Esmée's very very excited about it, she woke up at 5.30am saying 'party, party, party!'"
Speaking afterwards, she told HELLO!: "It's amazing to be here and for people to read about her and feel the same way that I do about her achievements."
She said of Harry: "He was so friendly, he's got a lot of patience."
Harry's foreword
Harry has written a touching foreword for the WellChild Awards programme, given to every guest in attendance.
It read: "Tonight marks a very special occasion - the 20th anniversary of the WellChild Awards. For two decades, this event has shone a spotlight on the extraordinary courage, resilience, and spirit of children and young people living with complex medical needs across the UK, as well as the incredible dedication of those who care for them.
"What began as a small moment of recognition has grown into a nationally recognised beacon of hope and celebration; a place where truly inspiring stories are shared and honoured.
"The WellChild Awards has grown to become a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when positivity, determination and community come together. As the needs of children with complex medical conditions continue to grow, so too does the importance of WellChild's work. The charity's remarkable team of 53 specialist children's nurses, family support staff, and corporate partners are enabling more families than ever to be safely discharged from hospital and live at home.
"I am immensely proud to stand alongside WellChild as its Patron, especially in this milestone year. Thank you to everyone who makes this evening possible, from our generous sponsors and supporters to the families, professionals and award winners who inspire us all.
"A special thank you to our headline sponsor, GSK, without whom this magical event simply couldn't happen. To each of our 2025 WellChild Award winners, as well as each of the 311 winners from across the past 20 years, congratulations.
"This evening is yours. Your voices and your stories. It is your courage and your smiles that lie at the heart of this celebration and inspire everything WellChild stands for.
"To the mums and dads out there - you are superheroes. Don't ever forget it.
"Have a wonderful evening."
The message was signed off with: "Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex."
Harry shares Netflix recommendations
There was more laughter when the Duke asked Grace Tutt, 13, which award she had won and both Grace and her mum Melanie momentarily forgot, triggering a fit of the giggles that continued when Harry also admitted he couldn't remember.
Grace won the Special Recognition Award for her courage after she was left paralysed from the waist down when her school bus collided with a tractor in May 2024.
She had her own question for the Duke at the end of their chat, asking what he liked to watch on Netflix.
Harry replied: "My wife and I just finished watching Hostage. It's very good, it's filmed here. If you haven't seen it, you should watch it."
He added: "Although if it's unsuitable, it wasn't my recommendation!"
Speaking afterwards, Grace's mum Melanie Tutt said the Duke had recommended "Hostage and Love is Blind."
She said Harry had encouraged keen swimmer Grace to meet some of the Invictus Games veterans to hear how they have adapted to continue taking part in sports.
"We are just waiting for Grace's tracheotomy to heal and she can't wait to get back in the pool," said Melanie.
WellChild reunion
The Duke also spoke to a group of former WellChild Award winners who returned for the 20th anniversary milestone.
They included aspiring TV presenter Dylan Bleach, who was given the opportunity to interview the Duke on camera.
"I’ve always said for many years that I still have a child inside of me, I think all of us do and being amongst these kids brings that out of me."
Prince Harry's speech
The Duke of Sussex has just delivered a moving speech at the WellChild Awards, where he hailed the young winners for "showing us the light when all too often darkness can consume us".
He continued: "This is your moment. While we reflect on twenty years of these Awards, the truth is that you are the story. You are the reason we gather here. Each of you is a beacon of hope and inspiration, not just to those in this room, but to the nation. Keep fighting. Keep smiling. And above all, keep showing us what strength, courage and joy really look like."
ICYMI: Prince William shares insight into children's personalities
The Prince and Princess of Wales were asked about their children as they visited the WI in Sunningdale, Ascot, earlier today.
Nina Derrick asked: "Is Louis a bit of a handful?" to which William appeared to defend his youngest son, saying: "He's a character, but he's a very good boy." The Prince added that Louis "likes to run his sister [Charlotte] around".
